Healthy Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important elements in improving your health.  Restful sleep gives your body a chance to rest and repair and regenerate cells.

Most Important Tip for Better Sleep

One of the most important things you can do to improve sleep is to get morning light.  I have talked about going outside to get sunlight within 1 hour of waking up before, read about that here. Today, I have an upgrade to share with you.

The most beneficial morning light to help set your circadian rhythm is within 1 hour of sunrise.  You can find when sunrise is where you live in most weather apps.  Wake up within 1 hour of sunrise and try to get 10-15 minutes of morning light.  You will be surprised how quickly your body will feel a difference in sleep and over time it will create a more positive mood because of the hormonal improvements it this will create.  

Sunrise

Recently I have changed up my game to include morning light within 1 hour of sunrise.  Within a few days I noticed that near the time of sunset, my body was wanting to go to bed.  It did not take long before my body wanted to wake up shortly after sunrise.  Where I live right now, today, July 12th, sunrise is 6:04 am so I got my morning light before 7:04 am.

What I Have Noticed

The greatest change I have noticed is that my sleep is phenomenal!  If I wake up to go to the bathroom, I am able to go right back to sleep.  I have some dreams and I feel rested and ready to wake in the morning.  

Metabolism

A nice surprise for me has been a recent experience in which I broke a weight loss plateau.  The sweetest thing about it was that I was on vacation for a couple weeks so gradually I ended up eating things I normally avoid.  One thing I was diligent about was getting outside light within 1 hour of sunrise.  When I returned home after vacation I figured I would have gained some weight but found I had actually lost a couple pounds. Then yesterday, I found that my weight was below a plateau I had been stuck at for months.  What a nice surprise that was!  

Hormonal Balance

Circadian rhythm is so very important for hormonal balance and metabolic improvements.  I know this sounds so simple and I know I have spoken about it before but I have this sneaking suspicion that many of the people I have shared this with have not tried it to see how well it works.

What May Interfere

Well, besides the event wherein you don't actually take the time and effort to get outside within 1 hour of sunrise, there are a few things that may interfere with the most benefit from getting your morning light:
  • Eating something too stimulating within 6 hours before bed
    • Caffeine (coffee, chocolate) and possibly too much sugar, etc.
  • Doing something too stimulating before bed
    • Deep thinking that uses a lot of left brain processes
  • Too much blue light from electronics within 2 hours before bed
    • Looking at a computer, cell phone, and other handheld devices, etc.
  • Eating something that causes inflammation in YOUR body
    • This is different for each individual, an elimination diet can be a good way to figure this out
